Dubai Launches Electric Flying Taxi: Just 10 Minutes Between Major City Areas

Dubai Launches a New Phase of Urban Transport with the Flying Taxi
The Emirate of Dubai is preparing to launch the "flying taxi" service in the coming months as an unconventional mode of transport relying on electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL), aimed at reducing traffic congestion and providing a faster, more sustainable travel experience.
The service is expected to be ready for commercial operation by next year, enhancing Dubai's position as a global leader in smart transport solutions.
The Air Taxi Project in Partnership with the Roads Authority and Joby Aviation
The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai is partnering with the American company Joby Aviation, based in California, which has developed the "Joby S4" electric aircraft as part of the "Uber Air by Joby" project.
This project is the first commercial electric air transport service in the region, with an exclusive franchise to operate the aircraft and manage passengers in Dubai for six years.
Vertical Take-off and Landing Stations in Strategic Locations Across Dubai
The project includes the establishment of four main vertical take-off and landing stations distributed in strategic locations:
- Dubai International Airport
- Jumeirah Palm Island
- Dubai Marina Area
- Downtown Dubai
A main station is also being built near Dubai International Airport, consisting of a four-story building covering an area of 3100 square meters, featuring two platforms for take-off and landing, with a capacity of up to 170,000 passengers annually, and fully air-conditioned facilities.
Specifications of the Flying Taxi: High Speed and Zero Emissions
The "Joby S4" electric aircraft features advanced technical capabilities including:
- Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL)
- Speed of up to 320 km/h
- Flight range of up to 160 km per charge
- Capacity for 4 passengers + pilot
- Low noise level not exceeding 45 decibels
- Zero carbon emissions
The aircraft also relies on advanced safety systems, including dual propulsion engines to ensure flight continuity even in case of system failures.
Reducing Travel Time from 45 Minutes to Just 10 Minutes
The journey between Dubai International Airport and Jumeirah Palm Island is expected to take only about 10 minutes, compared to approximately 45 minutes by car, making the flying taxi a revolutionary option for reducing travel time within the city and improving traffic efficiency.
Successful Operational Tests in the Presence of Dubai Leadership
Dubai witnessed the first trial operational tests of the electric aircraft in the desert, attended by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who confirmed that the project reflects Dubai's vision to develop future transport solutions that serve future generations and enhance the quality of life in the city.
Emirati Expansion: Abu Dhabi Tests “Midnight” and Ajman Enters Air Transport
Development is not limited to Dubai alone, as Abu Dhabi conducted a test of the "Midnight" electric aircraft from Archer Aviation at Al Bateen Airport last July, aimed at testing performance in harsh weather conditions.
The Transport Authority in Ajman has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Skyports Infrastructure to study the development of smart air transport infrastructure, including flying taxis and drones.
The UAE Issues the First Global Regulatory Framework for Air Taxis
The General Civil Aviation Authority in the UAE has issued regulations specific to air taxi services and vertical ports, becoming the first aviation regulatory body in the world to establish an official legal framework for this type of transport, paving the way for safe and widespread operation within cities.
Strategic Goals: Reducing Congestion, Enhancing Sustainability, and Tourism
The air taxi project in the UAE aims to:
- Reduce traffic congestion within cities
- Enhance environmental sustainability through electric aircraft
- Attract global investments in smart transport
- Support luxury tourism with an innovative transport experience
- Build national capabilities in operating and maintaining electric vertical aircraft
A Qualitative Leap in the Future of Urban Transport in the UAE
The flying taxi project represents a strategic step towards a future reliant on smart air transport within cities, supported by advanced infrastructure and fast charging technologies, enhancing the UAE's position as one of the most developed countries in the field of sustainable urban mobility.
