Cortisol: The Trend of the "Stress Hormone" Takes Over the Internet!

Social media has recently witnessed a frenzy over what is known as the "stress hormone" or cortisol, as it tops health trends among influencers and digital health enthusiasts.

These individuals have warned about alleged symptoms of chronic high cortisol, such as waking up at three in the morning, facial swelling known as "cortisol face," and fat accumulation in the abdominal area, along with dietary advice and exercises they claim help lower the hormone.

But doctors warn: it is merely a fake trend, and people should not be swayed by unscientific supplements or advice.

* Cortisol... An Essential Hormone for Life

Endocrinology experts confirm that cortisol is vital for life, secreted by the adrenal glands above the kidneys.

It plays a role in regulating inflammation, immunity, metabolism, blood pressure, and several other vital functions.

It is highly sensitive, rising in the morning upon waking and falling at night before sleep, as well as increasing during stress or illness.

Dr. Roberto Salvatore, an endocrinologist at Johns Hopkins University, said:

"Cortisol levels are regulated minute by minute... it is very rare for a health disorder to be caused solely by cortisol."

He added that chronic low cortisol is often diagnosed as adrenal insufficiency, such as Addison's disease, while severe high levels may indicate Cushing's syndrome, often due to benign tumors in the adrenal or pituitary glands, and is treated with medication, surgery, or both.

* Testing Should Not Be Done Alone

Doctors have warned against conducting cortisol tests without medical supervision, as the diverse symptoms of high or low cortisol overlap with other diseases, such as fatigue, weight loss, high blood pressure, sleep problems, excessive hair growth in women, and more.

Dr. Katie Guttenberg, an endocrinologist in Houston, said:

"There are many nuances in interpreting cortisol, which makes me concerned that patients may request tests on their own. A single blood test often does not provide useful information and may cause unnecessary anxiety."

* Supplements Are Not the Solution

Despite some influencers promoting supplements like ashwagandha and magnesium to lower cortisol, doctors affirm that there is no proven treatment without a prescription.

Excessively lowering cortisol can lead to serious health issues, so caution is advised.

Salvatore also pointed out a condition called "pseudo-Cushing's syndrome," which is milder but can cause similar symptoms due to alcohol dependence or other chronic issues, without a real tumor present.

* Conclusion: Focus on Health Basics

Experts recommend returning to the basics of stress management instead of getting caught up with one hormone:

adequate sleep, healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, and psychological therapy when needed.

Cortisol is not your enemy, but rather your very precise friend... do not let trends control your health.
