The Washington Post revealed that the Reliance Industries group, owned by Indian businessman and the richest person in Asia, Mukesh Ambani, imported oil from Russia worth nearly $33 billion since 2022.
According to government data reported by the newspaper, this quantity represents about 8% of Moscow's crude oil exports during the mentioned period.
The report added that these deals placed Ambani at the center of a diplomatic controversy, as U.S. President Donald Trump pressures India to stop its energy purchases from Russia, urging New Delhi to diversify its imports.
During his speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Trump criticized India, China, and several NATO allies for continuing to buy energy from Russia, considering that Europe's continuation of these practices is a "shame," emphasizing that European countries must "bear their responsibilities and stop all Russian imports immediately."
