The United States and Venezuela Announce Resumption of Diplomatic Relations After Years of Estrangement

After years of estrangement and political tension, the United States and Venezuela announced an agreement to resume diplomatic and consular relations between the two countries, in a move described as the beginning of a new phase aimed at enhancing stability, supporting economic recovery, and opening the door to political reconciliation within Venezuela.
The U.S. State Department clarified yesterday, Thursday, that this agreement represents a significant shift in the course of relations between the two countries, emphasizing that the step will contribute to creating conditions for a phase of dialogue and cooperation between Washington and Caracas.
The department added that the primary goal is to help the Venezuelan people progress through a gradual process that paves the way for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed in 2019 during the first term of U.S. President Donald Trump, following a decision made by then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro amid escalating political tensions between the two sides.
Relations between Washington and Caracas underwent a dramatic transformation at the beginning of this year, after U.S. forces conducted an operation in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, on January 3, resulting in the arrest of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
They were later transferred to New York, where they faced charges related to drug trafficking.
Since then, Venezuela has been experiencing a state of political turmoil, especially after Delcy Rodríguez, who served as Vice President under Maduro, took over the leadership of the country as interim president following this intervention.
In a simultaneous confirmation with Washington's announcement, the transitional government in Caracas also announced the resumption of relations with the United States, indicating that the next phase will be based on "constructive dialogue" founded on mutual respect and equality in sovereignty between the two countries, in addition to enhancing cooperation on multiple issues.
Both sides hope that this rapprochement will help ease political tensions and open a new chapter in relations, aiding Venezuela in overcoming its political and economic crisis, and paving the way for a more stable phase in the country.
