The Utah Attorney General's Office on Tuesday filed seven charges against Tyler Robinson, the suspect in the assassination of American political activist Charlie Kirk, including aggravated murder, possession of a weapon, and obstruction of justice.
Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Gray explained that Robinson obstructed the investigation by instructing a colleague to delete text messages and engaged in actions that posed significant risks to the lives of others, affirming that his office seeks to sentence him to death based on the evidence and the nature of the crime.
Robinson (22 years old) was arrested last Thursday at his father's home after admitting to his involvement in the shooting of Kirk, who died from his injuries after being shot in the neck during a college event last week.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox noted that the suspect comes from a conservative family but holds a "leftist ideology" and was active on the dark web and sites like Reddit, emphasizing that social media played a direct role in the crime.
Officials described the case as political assassination, as Kirk (31 years old) was an influential figure in conservative politics, leading the organization "Turning Point USA" and hosting a podcast that attracts millions of followers.
