Widespread Controversy in Egypt After Modification of the Lyrics of "You Are Not My Heart" by Abdel Halim Hafez

Modification of the Lyrics of "You Are Not My Heart" During the Opera House Concert
The lyrics of the song "You Are Not My Heart" by the late singer Abdel Halim Hafez sparked widespread controversy in Egypt after Ahmed Iftikhar, known as the "Nightingale of the Opera," presented a modified version of the song during a concert commemorating the anniversary of the artist's passing.
Iftikhar replaced the phrase "A foolish fate" with "A confident fate," which elicited mixed reactions from the audience and critics.
Opera House Source: The Modification is Not New
A source at the Egyptian Opera House revealed that this line has been modified in opera concerts for many years, reaching up to 20 years, confirming that this incident is not the first of its kind.
Critics' Reactions: Preserving Musical Heritage
Art critic Tarek El-Shenawy commented:
"What is happening is nonsense, and unfortunately, opera singers have been making this inappropriate modification for years. I appeal to all heritage bands and the Opera House: present the poem without omissions, and return the word from 'confident' to its original 'foolish'."
El-Shenawy pointed out that the crisis began when Sheikh Mohamed Al-Ghazali considered describing fate as "foolish" contrary to faith, prompting some audience members to oppose this view.
Statement from Abdel Halim Hafez's Family: No Discontent with the Modification
The family of the late artist issued a statement via Facebook, confirming that they do not feel discontent with the modification of the song's lyrics, noting:
"We are not upset about the modification of some words in the song 'You Are Not My Heart' at the opera concert, just for those who try to fish in troubled waters."
The statement added: "Ahmed Iftikhar is a respected and committed singer, and he has a perspective that we do not oppose but respect. The intention was good, and there is no malice behind it as some are trying to promote."
The family continued: "Some said that the singer was Mohamed Hassan, not Ahmed Iftikhar, and whoever sang it, we are not upset. Hafez himself, if he were here, might have changed the word; everyone makes mistakes."
Historical Information About the Song "You Are Not My Heart"
The song "You Are Not My Heart" was written by the late poet Kamel El-Shenawy (Uncle Tarek) and was performed by Abdel Halim Hafez in 1966.
Egyptian press archives document that the radio's decision in 1977, ten years after the song's release, was to remove the controversial segment in response to objections regarding its implications and meanings.
