The competition in Egyptian drama has intensified with the rising debate over the title of "most viewed," as several stars of the series have engaged in a public dispute, each asserting that their work leads in viewership ratings, amidst conflicting reports and the absence of an official entity to settle the matter.
The current battle is focused between the series "Ali Clay" starring Ahmed El Awady, and the series "Ifraaj" featuring star Amr Saad, while director Mohamed Sami has reignited discussions about the success of his famous series "Jaafar El Omda," which starred Mohamed Ramadan during Ramadan 2023, asserting that it still dominates the drama scene.
Conflicting Reports Ignite Dispute
The debate began when Amr Saad shared a circulating report on social media indicating that the series "Ifraaj" ranks second in viewership after the program "Ramez Level the Beast," while "Ali Clay" came in fifth place.
Saad commented on his social media accounts, stating that he wished production companies and television channels would announce these reports officially to put an end to what he described as attempts to "forge facts and distort public awareness."
Mohamed Sami: There is No Number One
For his part, Mohamed Sami posted a video on his Facebook account to respond to the escalating controversy, confirming that determining the most viewed series is not a simple matter.
Sami stated that the success of any dramatic work is not measured solely by numbers, but by its spread among the audience and the discussions about it in the streets and cafes.
He added:
"There is no such thing as a series that has been the highest viewed over the last ten years, and the term (number one) has become provocative."
He pointed out that the series "Jaafar El Omda" achieved a wide public phenomenon that no other work has reached so far.
A Surprise from "Nile Sat"
In a notable development, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Nile Sat, Sameh Qatta, denied the circulating reports claiming that the series "Ali Clay" leads in viewership ratings.
He confirmed in an official statement that the lists being circulated online attributed to the company are entirely incorrect, clarifying that the role of "Nile Sat" is limited to providing satellite broadcasting services to channels and not measuring viewership ratings of programs or series.
El Awady Responds with Sarcasm
For his part, Ahmed El Awady responded to the controversy in a sarcastic manner, posting a collection of scenes from his series that achieved significant popularity online, and wrote in a comment:
"Why don’t you count the views here?.. Three views equal a whole series."
Actress Yasmin Abdel Aziz also entered the competition indirectly after her brother confirmed that her series "We Forget" was the real work deserving the title of "Number One."
Amidst the dispute, media personality Radwa El Sherbiny sarcastically commented on the debate saying: "If everyone is Number One.. then who is Number Two?"
