On Sunday, June 1, 2025, President Ahmed Al-Shar'a issued Presidential Decree No. (65) appointing Judge Hassan Youssef Al-Turba as the Attorney General of the Syrian Arab Republic, reflecting efforts to restructure the judiciary and establish an independent and effective judicial institution serving the aspirations of the Syrian people for justice and accountability. Judge Hassan Al-Turba is a prominent legal figure in the new Syria, hailing from the town of Al-Qahtaniyah in Al-Hasakah Governorate in the northeast of the country, known for its social and ethnic diversity. Al-Turba was raised in an environment of ethical and scientific values, known from a young age for his wisdom and balance, leading him to commit to issues of justice and human rights. Al-Turba obtained his law degree from Syrian universities, showing interest in human rights issues and public freedoms since his years of study, participating in numerous seminars and training programs in the judicial field, gaining extensive experience in handling complex legal issues. He began his professional career in 2013 in revolutionary courts established in liberated areas, playing an active role in establishing alternative judicial bodies, ensuring the building of an independent judiciary through drafting regulations, training judges and lawyers, and upholding principles of transparency and legal compliance. Al-Turba has always been a courageous voice against oppression, having been arrested on April 7, 2012, by the State Security branch in Al-Qamishli for supporting peaceful protests against the previous regime. After a period of detention involving pressure and intimidation, he was released and resumed his human rights and judicial activities with determination. On December 13, 2025, he was appointed by the Ministry of Justice in the caretaker government led by Mohammed Al-Bashir as a Senior Judicial Inspector and a member of the committee for interviewing judges over the age of sixty-five who wish to continue their judicial work, reflecting great confidence in his abilities and integrity within the judicial institution. The appointment of Judge Hassan Al-Turba as the Attorney General comes at a critical stage for Syria, as the transitional government seeks to establish a fair and independent rule of law, reflecting the hopes of Syrians for building a better future. Al-Turba is considered the ideal choice due to his legal expertise, judicial struggle, and clear vision for enhancing judicial independence.
