Treasury Secretary Scott Besent urged China today, Wednesday, to fulfill its obligations under a preliminary trade agreement with the United States reached in Geneva last month, following hours of agreement between American and Chinese officials on a new framework for implementing the agreement. Besent stated before the House Ways and Means Committee that China has a "unique opportunity" to stabilize its economy by shifting from excessive industrial production for export to increasing domestic consumption. He added, "But the country needs to be a reliable partner in trade negotiations... If China decides to correct its course by adhering to the end of the preliminary trade agreement we set in Geneva last month, achieving a significant and beautiful balance between the world's two largest economies will be possible." Besent did not provide details in his testimony about the agreed framework with China late on Tuesday after two days of negotiations in London. He left the talks early to return to Washington for a hearing in the House of Representatives.
