In a statement reported by CBS, President Al-Shara said: "Lifting the American sanctions on Syria is a courageous step by President Trump, and the countries of the world should follow suit, as our country deserves to be treated fairly away from narrow political calculations."

He added: "I would like to meet President Trump again, because we need to restore relations in a good and direct way, serving the interests of both peoples and restoring balance to international relations."
