Khartoum has recorded the return of more than 1.3 million displaced persons, in the largest wave of return the capital has witnessed since the outbreak of war in Sudan, according to a report issued by the United Nations, which warned of the continued displacement crisis amid a lack of humanitarian resources and international support.
Local efforts to improve basic services
In preparation for the return of residents, Khartoum's governor Ahmed Osman Hamza directed the relevant authorities to intensify efforts to ensure the stability of basic services, especially with the approach of the month of Ramadan. The local health ministry also announced the distribution of food aid to healthcare workers, in an attempt to alleviate the increasing humanitarian pressures.
UN warnings of a worsening humanitarian crisis
Despite the large wave of return, international reports confirm that millions of Sudanese continue to suffer from a severe food crisis, amid damage to infrastructure and vital services due to the ongoing conflict. Estimates indicate that a lack of funding could hinder humanitarian efforts and complicate living conditions in the country.
International calls for an immediate ceasefire
For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed the organization's commitment to intensifying diplomatic efforts to pressure for an immediate ceasefire. His statements came on the sidelines of African Union meetings, where he emphasized the need to create political conditions to end the conflict.
Regional and international coordination to support peace efforts
Guterres noted that the international organization is working in cooperation with the Arab League and several international and regional entities to enhance the chances of reaching a comprehensive political settlement. He also called for increased international support for African initiatives aimed at achieving security and stability on the continent.
A multidimensional crisis threatening stability
The United Nations confirmed that the conflict in Sudan is characterized by the involvement of multiple parties and intertwined interests, making the resolution of the crisis more complex, warning that the continuation of the conflict without sufficient resources or strong political will could exacerbate the humanitarian disaster in the country.
