Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced today, Monday, Italy's readiness to assist in training police forces in the Gaza Strip and other areas of the Palestinian territories, as part of Rome's contribution to enhancing regional security and stability.
Tajani stated in a press conference in Rome: "We are ready to train a new police force in Gaza, and we are also prepared to train the Palestinian police forces," emphasizing Italy's commitment to providing technical and training support to local security forces.
Participation in the Peace Council Initiative
The minister noted that Italy will participate as an observer in Donald Trump's Peace Council initiative, which aims to end the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
He also revealed that Rome has received an invitation to attend a council meeting this week in the U.S. capital, Washington, as part of steps to follow up on the implementation of the American plan to end the conflict.
International Context
This move comes after the United Nations Security Council's adoption of the establishment of the council as part of Trump's management plan, to coordinate efforts to end the conflict and find practical mechanisms to enhance civilian security and reconstruction in Gaza.
Italy's contribution is part of European and international efforts to support Palestinian institutions and strengthen the local police's ability to enforce the law and protect civilians amid ongoing tensions in the region.
