The European Commission stated today, Monday, that the situation in Sudan is extremely serious, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities to protect civilians. It noted that about 30 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, while approximately 9 million have been displaced within the country due to the ongoing conflict.
The Commission also condemned the attacks on humanitarian aid convoys, pointing out that the Rapid Support Forces are responsible for committing atrocities against civilians.
For his part, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights mentioned that drone strikes have resulted in the deaths of around 90 civilians in the Kordofan region, targeting civilian areas and health facilities. He explained that about 21 million people are suffering from severe food insecurity due to the ongoing war since mid-2023, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the country.
