The "Dish Wire" Trend Ignites Controversy in Egypt.. Serious Burns and Medical Warnings After a Two-Year-Old Child is Injured

Social media platforms in Egypt are witnessing a dangerous trend among children and teenagers during the month of Ramadan, which involves igniting what is known as "dish wire" and spinning it in the air to capture the flying sparks in videos shared to gain views and interaction.
However, what seems to some as just an experiment or game has turned into a real source of danger after several injuries with varying degrees of burns have been recorded.

A Two-Year-Old Child Becomes a Victim of the Flying Sparks

The most notable incident involved a child named Omar, who is two years old, as he suffered severe burns after a group of young people ignited "dish wire" and spun it in the street, causing the burning sparks to transfer to his clothes within moments.
The child was immediately taken to Ahl Masr Foundation Hospital for Burns to receive treatment after sustaining burns over large parts of his body.

Doctors Warn: The Sparks Can Cause Deep Burns

Dr. Hatem Abdelhaq, a specialist in internal medicine and emergency, stated that igniting "dish wire" and then spinning it in the air is a highly dangerous behavior, as the metal wire reacts quickly with fire and releases flaming sparks that can transfer to the skin or clothing within seconds.
He explained that these sparks can cause burns of varying degrees and can turn into deep burns if the clothing catches fire, which poses a compounded risk to children due to their sensitive skin.

Possibility of Permanent Scarring and Complex Surgeries

For his part, Dr. Ahmed Omar Bahles, a consultant plastic surgeon, confirmed that the burns resulting from the burning of "dish wire" are among the most dangerous skin injuries, as the burning metal sparks can stick to the skin and continue to burn for several seconds.
He pointed out that these burns can reach the deep layers of the skin, potentially leaving permanent scars or physical deformities, and may later require complex surgical treatments such as skin grafting or multiple cosmetic surgeries.

The Psychological Impact of Dangerous Trends

Dr. Gamal Fawzyz, a consultant psychiatrist, explained that the spread of these trends among children and teenagers is often linked to the desire for attention and admiration through social media.
He added that this age group tends to take risks and assert themselves in front of friends, which drives some to imitate trending content without a real understanding of the dangers involved.

Calls for Awareness and Supervision

Health experts emphasized the need for families, schools, and media to intervene to raise awareness of the dangers of imitating popular trends online, especially those involving the use of fire or dangerous tools.
Doctors also stressed the importance of quick intervention in burn cases by immediately removing the victim from the source of fire, cooling the burn area with running water, and then heading to the nearest hospital for necessary treatment.
