Aromatic candles... a hidden danger filling your home's air:
If you think lighting aromatic candles creates a calm and refreshing atmosphere in your home, perhaps it's time to rethink! A recent scientific study has revealed that these candles, often seen as a safe alternative to traditional ones, may actually be an unexpected source of indoor air pollution, posing a threat to your health without you realizing.
According to researchers at the American Chemical Society, burning aromatic candles releases ultrafine particles into the air, which can react with ozone to form harmful compounds when inhaled. These intriguing findings were published in the ACS Environmental Science and Technology Letters journal, where scientists explained that the melting wax surface releases high concentrations of volatile organic compounds, hydrocarbon substances capable of entering the respiratory system and bloodstream.
To demonstrate these risks, researchers conducted experiments on 15 different types of candles, both scented and unscented, inside a simulated home model, analyzing the particle concentrations in the surrounding air. The surprise was that the discovered particles, ranging in size from 1 to 100 nanometers, spread at levels similar to those emitted by traditional candles, raising significant concerns about their safety for indoor use.
In a statement to "SciTech Daily," a specialized scientific research website, researchers confirmed that these particles are so small that they can penetrate respiratory tissues and enter the bloodstream, increasing the health risks associated with inhaling them.
So, before lighting your next aromatic candle, think twice;
Is the romantic ambiance worth risking your health?
