Russia reveals a new nuclear missile 'unmatched'.. and Putin confirms the success of the test

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced today, Sunday, that his country has successfully tested a nuclear-powered intercontinental cruise missile, describing it as 'a weapon unmatched in the world'.
During a field visit to one of the Russian army command centers, Putin appeared in military attire and listened to a presentation from Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, who explained that the test was conducted last Tuesday, and that the missile — named 'Burevestnik' — traveled a distance of approximately 14,000 kilometers and remained airborne for about 15 continuous hours.
The Moscow Times quoted Putin as saying that 'the new weapon is a unique achievement in the history of Russian defense industries, and no other country has anything like it yet'.
Context of tension and arms escalation
The revelation of the missile comes at a time when relations between Moscow and Western capitals are experiencing escalating tension due to the war in Ukraine, and increasing Western warnings of a new nuclear arms race.
Putin had stated on October 10 that 'the era of the nuclear arms race has already begun', indicating that his country 'is working on developing advanced strategic systems', and that 'he will soon announce a new weapon within the Russian nuclear arsenal'.
'Burevestnik'.. a controversial project
The 'Burevestnik' missile — which means 'storm bird' in Russian — is one of the most controversial Russian defense projects since it was first announced in 2018.
It features a nuclear engine that allows it an almost unlimited range and the ability to fly for long hours, making it difficult to detect by conventional defense systems, according to military experts.
Observers believe that the Russian announcement carries political deterrence messages as much as it reflects technological advancement, especially in light of the growing military tension with NATO and the ongoing confrontation in Ukraine with no signs of a near settlement.
