The former Mexican international defender and one of the stars of FC Barcelona and AS Monaco, Rafael Márquez, will become the coach of the Mexico national team after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, as announced by the Director of National Teams at the Mexican Football Federation, Duilio Davino.
Davino confirmed that Márquez's contract has already been signed, and he will officially start his role after the World Cup, as part of a plan aimed at leading the team towards the 2030 World Cup.
Long International Career of Rafael Márquez with the Mexico National Team
Rafael Márquez has had a distinguished international career with the Mexico national team, playing 147 international matches, making him one of the most capped players in his country's history.
Márquez participated in five World Cups (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018), serving as captain in four of them, reflecting his significant leadership position within the team.
His Current Role as Assistant Coach Before Taking Over
Rafael Márquez is currently serving as the assistant coach of the Mexico national team under head coach Javier Aguirre since August 2024, and he will continue in this role until the end of the team's participation in the 2026 World Cup hosted by North America.
Márquez is set to officially take over the head coaching position immediately after the tournament.

The Director of National Teams, Duilio Davino, stated in an interview with Fox Sports that Márquez's contract is “already signed,” confirming that the federation trusts his ability to lead the team in the upcoming phase.

Rafael Márquez had a strong professional career that spanned from 1996 to 2018, during which he achieved many important titles.
He won the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona in 2006 and 2009, and secured four La Liga titles with Barcelona.
He also won the French league title with Monaco in 2000 and achieved the FIFA Confederations Cup title with the Mexico national team in 1999, in addition to being the runner-up in the Copa América in 2001.
Beginning of His Coaching Career After Retirement
After retiring from football, Rafael Márquez began his managerial career with Atlas Guadalajara, the club where he started his professional playing career.
He also worked as a coach for youth teams at Real Sociedad and Deportivo Alcalá between 2020 and 2021, before taking charge of Barcelona Athletic, the reserve team of FC Barcelona, from 2022 to 2024.
