Paris Extends a Hand for Dialogue: The New French Interior Minister Seeks to Normalize Relations with Algeria

Nunez, who has recently taken office, acknowledged that the current tension has led to a near-complete halt in security cooperation between Paris and Algeria, which he described as a "big problem" for an Interior Minister in light of shared security challenges.
The roots of the crisis date back to the summer of 2024, when France officially recognized the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco to resolve the Western Sahara issue, which Algeria considered an unacceptable bias, leading to the freezing of several diplomatic and security channels.
In an interview with French media, Nunez emphasized the need to "act" to rebuild communication bridges, asserting that resuming dialogue with Algeria has become an urgent necessity, especially in security matters and information exchange.
The French step comes at a sensitive time, amid regional transformations and increasing security challenges, making the normalization of relations with Algeria a strategic priority.
