Mexico Announces Urgent Decision to End the School Year Before the 2026 World Cup

Mexico Ends the School Year Early in Preparation for the World Cup and Heat Wave
The Mexican government has agreed to end the school year approximately six weeks early as part of the country's preparations to host the World Cup, alongside facing an expected exceptional heat wave during the summer.
The school year was originally scheduled to end around July 15, but an official decision issued yesterday, Thursday, May 7, 2026, set the new end date for June 5, just six days before the tournament begins.
The new school year is set to start on August 31, with a two-week "learning enhancement" period before classes officially begin.
World Cup Hosting Drives Changes to the Academic Calendar in Mexico
These adjustments come as Mexico prepares to host 13 matches in the men's World Cup, which will kick off on June 11, 2026, in a joint organization with the United States and Canada.
Among the notable matches is the Mexican national team facing South Africa, which will take place at the Azteca Stadium in the capital.
Reports also indicated that the previous academic schedule would coincide with most of the tournament period, including semifinal matches that were scheduled to take place at noon local time in Mexico.
Mexican Government: The Decision Balances Education and International Commitments
The government confirmed in an official statement that the adjustment to the academic calendar aims to ensure adherence to educational curricula while considering local needs and the country's international commitments related to hosting the tournament.
The statement clarified that these measures came after coordination between the Ministry of Public Education and several government entities to ensure the educational process is organized in line with exceptional circumstances.
Ministry of Education: Protecting Students from Record Heat Wave
Education Minister Mario Delgado stated that the decision prioritizes "the well-being and enhancement of the educational community."
He added that the adjustment is primarily due to the exceptional heat wave expected during June and July, in addition to hosting the World Cup in the country.
Mexico is already experiencing unprecedented temperature increases this year, with the city of Hermosillo in the northwest recording a record 42 degrees Celsius in March, according to data linked to recent climate indicators.
Weather forecasts also predict continued heat waves throughout the summer, with temperatures potentially exceeding the normal range of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius.
Mexico's Stadiums in the World Cup and the Final in New Jersey

The tournament is scheduled to conclude on July 19, 2026, with the final match taking place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, United States.
Reports also confirmed that some matches, including semifinal matches, will be held in the afternoon, increasing the climatic and organizational challenges during the tournament.
