Melting of A-23A: The Largest and Oldest Iceberg in the World Turns into a Pool of Water Amid Warnings of Climate Change

The Antarctic continent witnessed the collapse of the largest and oldest iceberg in the world, known as the A-23A iceberg, after it effectively turned into a pool of water in early April 2026, in one of the most prominent phenomena associated with climate change.
The iceberg broke away from the Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986, before beginning a long drifting journey that lasted nearly four decades in the Southern Oceans.

Sharp Decline in Area After a Long Journey to Warmer Waters

During its journey, the iceberg drifted over 2,300 kilometers before entering warmer waters that contributed to its accelerated melting.
According to satellite data, the area of the A-23A iceberg shrank from over 6,000 square kilometers in 2020 to only about 170 square kilometers in its final stages, before it nearly completely disintegrated.

Satellites Capture Moments of Final Disintegration

Scientists relied on satellite images to document the final stages of the iceberg's life, where melting water pools appeared on its surface, weakening its structure and accelerating its collapse.
Researchers confirmed that the accumulation of water on the surface was one of the key factors in the disintegration of the iceberg during its final months.

Scientists: A Phenomenon Reflecting Accelerated Climate Change

Experts believe that the melting of the A-23A iceberg represents a clear indicator of the impacts of climate change in polar regions, where melting processes are accelerating due to rising ocean temperatures.
Scientists assert that these phenomena do not reflect an isolated event, but rather part of a recurring pattern observed in the Antarctic ice cover over recent decades.

Ongoing Scientific Challenges and Maritime Risks

Despite significant advancements in satellite monitoring technologies, researchers indicate that many questions remain regarding the movement and disintegration of icebergs.
Experts also warn that the small fragments resulting from these collapses may pose a danger to maritime navigation, due to the difficulty of tracking them in open oceans.

An Environmental Event Highlighting the Future of Antarctica

The collapse of the A-23A iceberg is a landmark event in the acceleration of environmental changes in the Antarctic continent, amid increasing scientific calls for closer monitoring of the world's major ice masses in the coming years.
