The Libyan Football Federation investigates goalkeeper Al-Wahishi's mistake after a "catastrophic" goal against Cape Verde

The Libyan Football Federation announced the opening of an urgent investigation into the grave mistake made by the national team's goalkeeper Murad Al-Wahishi during the team's match against Cape Verde, which ended in a draw (3-3) in the ninth round of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Al-Wahishi, the goalkeeper of Al-Ahli Benghazi, caused a bizarre goal in the 76th minute when Libya was leading (3-1), after an easy ball played by one of the Cape Verde players from a distance passed between his legs, astonishing the fans and observers.
BSNSports.com.ng reported that the Libyan Federation decided to open a comprehensive investigation into the incident after a widespread wave of anger on social media, where fans demanded an official clarification about what happened, considering the mistake “unjustifiable” and affecting the team's path in the qualifiers.
The federation confirmed in a statement that it is committed to “ensuring integrity and discipline within the ranks of the team,” and that it will conduct a detailed review of the performance of the coaching staff and players in the match.
Libyan fans had pinned great hopes on achieving a victory that would enhance the chances of the “Knights of the Mediterranean” in reaching the World Cup, but defensive mistakes, especially the blunder by goalkeeper Al-Wahishi, dashed those ambitions.
No official comment has been issued by Al-Wahishi regarding the incident so far.
