Joan Laporta, the former president of FC Barcelona, revealed that his relationship with Argentine star Lionel Messi has remained tense since the player's departure from the club in the summer of 2021.
Reasons for the Tension
Laporta explained that the relationship soured after the failure to renew Messi's contract following his election as president of the club, which led to the player's move to Paris Saint-Germain and later to Inter Miami. He added that Messi refused to shake his hand during the 2023 Ballon d'Or ceremony, despite Laporta's attempts to approach him.
His Statements About Messi and Camp Nou
Laporta stated: "Leo deserves a statue at Camp Nou just like Cruyff and Kubala," emphasizing that the tribute would take place when the stadium is completed and in the presence of more than 100,000 spectators. He also noted that Messi is always welcome at Camp Nou if he wishes to visit the stadium.
The Upcoming Resignation
This statement comes after Laporta's resignation from the presidency of the club in February, in preparation for the club elections next March.
