The royal family announced in a statement that the King of Spain, Felipe VI, has granted tennis star Rafael Nadal the title of Marquis today, Thursday, in appreciation of his contribution to serving the nation through his athletic excellence.

Nadal, who has won 22 titles in the four major championships and retired last year, was among 6 individuals honored during the celebrations marking the tenth anniversary of the King's ascension to the throne, including singer Luz Casal and Paralympic swimmer Teresa Perales.

The royal family said: "They are a source of pride for Spain and a constant reference point for the values that should inspire our society".

Nadal, the former world number one, aged 39, will hold the Marquis title of Levant in Mallorca, where he was born and lives. His descendants can inherit this title.

The French Open honored Nadal, who has won it a record 14 times, last month with a permanent footprint of his foot on the main court.
