Israel Stops Gas Exports to Egypt Amid Rising Tensions with Iran

The Israeli Ministry of Energy announced yesterday evening, the halt of gas exports to Egypt following mutual military attacks with Iran, a move that has raised anticipation in the energy markets in the region.
For its part, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed that it was on high alert, having implemented a series of proactive measures in recent times to ensure the stability of energy supplies for the local market, including natural gas and petroleum products.
The ministry explained that these steps were part of a comprehensive effort within the Cabinet and in coordination with the relevant ministries and institutions, to ensure meeting the needs of citizens and enhancing the state's readiness to face any developments, in light of the rapid geopolitical changes, considering that energy security is one of the fundamental pillars of national security.
The ministry indicated continuous monitoring of the situation due to recent military strikes and the resulting halt of gas supplies from the Eastern Mediterranean, reassuring citizens that there is a diversity of supply sources and ready alternative capacities.
It mentioned that Egypt has worked throughout the year 2025 to secure additional quantities of liquefied natural gas for long periods to meet the needs of the electricity, industry, and citizens, through:
• Diversifying gas sources alongside local production.
• Contracting for shipments of liquefied natural gas from various sources.
• Concluding long-term agreements and supply contracts with global companies.
• Establishing and equipping integrated infrastructure to receive liquefied gas and operate regasification ships, enhancing national security in the energy field.
At the same time, Egypt continued to support the increase of local gas production by regularly paying partners' dues to enhance exploration and production activities, confirming its readiness to deal with any changing scenarios in coordination with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy to ensure the continuous supply of gas to the electricity sector in the required quantities.
As for petroleum products, the ministry confirmed the formation of secure strategic reserves of gasoline, diesel, and butane, and increasing refined quantities in Egyptian refineries, alongside periodic maintenance programs to maximize storage capacity efficiency and ensure market stability, with additional imports to meet emergency needs.
This development comes at a time when ships in the Gulf are receiving reports about a potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, further complicating the regional scene and placing additional pressures on energy markets in the Middle East.
