Greek Frigate Secures Passage of New Batch of Commercial Ships in the Red Sea

The European Union (EU) reported that the Greek frigate HS HYDRA secured the passage of a second batch of commercial ships in the Red Sea, west of Yemen, as part of the European naval mission EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, which aims to protect international navigation in the region against repeated attacks by the Houthis since February 2024.
Supporting Commercial Navigation in the Red Sea
The EUNAVFOR ASPIDES mission stated in a statement on Wednesday:
"The Greek frigate HS HYDRA provided support and protection for commercial ships transiting the Red Sea, ensuring that crews and cargo reach their destinations safely."
It is noted that this operation is the second in the last two days, after the Italian frigate LUIGI RIZZO completed a similar mission last Monday.
The ASPIDES mission confirmed its continuation of operations, contributing to the protection of commercial maritime traffic within its operational area in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Greece's Participation in the European Naval Force
Greece is participating with two frigates in the European naval force, which have been alternating operations since the mission began in February 2024, following the escalation of Houthi attacks against commercial ships in the southern part of the Red Sea.
HS HYDRA is one of these two frigates.
Protecting Over 1450 Commercial Ships
The European naval mission announced, after completing 23 months of operations, that its war units have provided protection and support for over 1450 commercial ships while transiting the southern part of the Red Sea, which has witnessed repeated attacks on international shipping traffic.
