Germany Between Supporting Ukraine and Concerns Over War Expansion: Results of a New Opinion Poll

A new opinion poll has revealed the divisions within German public opinion regarding their stance on continued support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
While the majority of Germans support increasing Western aid to Kyiv, there is growing concern about the war expanding to other countries.
* Key Findings:
• 52% of Germans support enhancing Western aid to Ukraine, especially if Russia refuses to enter peace negotiations or a ceasefire.
• Among these, 28% prefer that the aid be both military and financial, while 12% prefer to provide only financial aid, and 12% only wish to send weapons without financial assistance.
• Conversely, 35% of Germans expressed opposition to continuing aid to Ukraine, while 13% did not express an opinion on this matter.
* Concerns Over War Expansion:
• Despite this relative support, 54% of Germans feel concerned about the possibility of the war expanding to NATO member countries, such as Poland or Lithuania.
This figure reflects a slight decline compared to the previous poll in September, where the concern was higher by 8%.
• 34% of participants said they do not feel concerned about this expansion, which is an increase of 6% from the previous poll.
* The poll was conducted on:
• February 5 and 6, 2026, involving 1,002 people.
This poll reflects the significant challenges Germany faces in balancing its support for Ukraine with concerns over the conflict's escalation.
As the war in Ukraine continues, the stance of Germans remains divided amid ongoing political and economic tensions in Europe.
