The match between Liverpool and Bournemouth at "Anfield" was briefly halted on Friday evening, August 16, during the opening of the new season of the Premier League, after Bournemouth striker Antoine Semenyo was subjected to racist abuse from one of the fans.
Video footage circulated on social media showed the moment a fan with disabilities approached Semenyo while he was preparing to take a throw-in, directing racist remarks at him directly, which sparked swift reactions on the pitch.
In the 28th minute of the match, referee Anthony Taylor noticed the incident and spoke directly with Semenyo, who is of African descent.
Immediately, the referee went to the coaching areas of both teams, Dutch coach Arne Slot of Liverpool and Spanish coach Andoni Iraola of Bournemouth, and informed them of the details of the incident, as well as speaking with the captains of both teams.
After consulting, the match was stopped for about two minutes before it resumed again amid charged atmospheres.
The Premier League confirmed to the Associated Press that the reason for the stoppage was directly related to the complaint made by Semenyo regarding the racist abuse he suffered.
For his part, renowned commentator Peter Drury commented on Sky Sports saying: "We received from the Premier League match center that Antoine Semenyo was the victim of a racial comment from one of the fans."
The incident sparked a wave of outrage, amid calls for strict measures against any form of racism within stadiums, regardless of the identity or status of the perpetrator.
