In a move that reflects a trend towards enhancing the efficiency of public transport, the Egyptian government announced the assignment of the management and operation of the Cairo monorail lines to a consortium that includes the French company Alstom and the Egyptian Company for Metro Management and Operation, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Transport and owns the project.
The consortium will officially start its work in January 2026, under an agreement that includes an annual financial compensation for operation and maintenance tasks, with a comprehensive commitment to the periodic maintenance of systems and vehicles, to ensure sustained performance and passenger safety.
The project is considered one of the largest transport projects in Egypt, with a total cost of approximately 2.695 billion euros, and includes two lines with a total length of 98.5 kilometers, serving 35 stations that connect vital areas in Greater Cairo and the New Administrative Capital.
The consortium will implement European operating standards, including autonomous driving systems, smart monitoring, and periodic updates to the infrastructure, which enhances the urban transport experience and reduces traffic congestion in Cairo.
