China accused the United States today, Sunday, of applying "double standards" in its dealings with international trade, following the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump of new tariffs on Chinese goods.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated in an official online statement that the U.S. decision is a "clear example of double standards," pointing out that these tariffs complicate the relationship between the two countries.
* Ongoing Escalation in Economic Measures
Since last September, China has accused the United States of escalating economic measures against it.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce confirmed that these U.S. measures "have severely harmed China's interests," and considered that these policies "have severely undermined the atmosphere of economic and trade talks" between the two sides.
The ministry added that "the continuous threat of imposing high tariffs each time is an inappropriate approach to dealing with China."
* 100% Tariffs on Chinese Goods
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday the imposition of an additional 100% tariff on a range of Chinese goods, as part of the response to what he described as unfair practices by China, including Beijing's reduction of rare earth exports needed by many U.S. industries.
Trump also threatened to cancel the scheduled summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping if an agreement satisfactory to both sides on this issue is not reached.
Trump confirmed that these measures aim to protect U.S. interests in the face of what he described as unfair trade practices by China.
* International Reactions and Cooperation Between China and Europe
In this context, China and Europe emphasized the importance of cooperation to confront U.S. tariffs.
Beijing sees Trump's threats to impose additional tariffs as a potential hindrance to future negotiations between the two major economic powers.
The United States has been applying an escalating trade policy towards China for years, reflecting the increasing tensions between the two countries in various economic and political fields.
* Potential Impacts on International Relations
Trump's tariff measures are raising increasing concerns in international markets, as the trade escalation between the world's two largest economies affects global supply chains and increases economic uncertainty in many countries.
