On the evening of Monday, May 26, 2025, a horrific hit-and-run accident occurred in the center of Liverpool, North England, during a celebratory parade for Liverpool Football Club fans following the team's victory in the English Premier League title. A black car plowed into the large crowds gathered in the streets for the celebration, resulting in at least 27 injuries, including 4 children, who were transported to hospitals for treatment. Videos circulating on social media showed the car weaving through the crowds, hitting fans, while some people tried to stop the car or the driver, amidst scenes of panic and screaming. The British police, specifically Merseyside Police, stated that the incident was not considered a terrorist act, confirming it as an isolated incident and that they were not looking for any other suspects after arresting the 53-year-old British driver. The police received reports of the incident around 6:00 p.m. (9:00 p.m. Saudi time), and emergency teams quickly responded to provide necessary medical assistance, while investigations are ongoing. This incident took place during massive celebrations attended by nearly a million people, where Liverpool players, including stars Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, toured on an open-top bus to celebrate with the crowds filling the streets. These celebrations mark the first official celebration by Liverpool fans of the English Premier League title in 35 years, after similar celebrations were canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the scenes as "horrific," expressing his condolences and support for the injured and their families, and thanking emergency services for their swift response. It is worth noting that Liverpool Football Club witnessed a major tragedy in 1989 at Hillsborough Stadium, where 97 fans died in a tragic crush, making it the biggest sports disaster in British history, which makes this incident reminiscent of that tragedy. Emergency teams provided medical support to the injured, while the police are conducting investigations to determine the circumstances of the incident accurately.
