The Karmouz area in Alexandria witnessed a tragic incident yesterday evening, Thursday, where a residential building inhabited by residents collapsed, resulting in injuries to several individuals, amid intensive efforts by rescue teams to find survivors under the rubble.
Upon receiving a report of the building's collapse, civil protection forces urgently moved to the scene of the incident, where it was found that several residents were trapped under the debris, including a girl.
So far, three injured individuals have been rescued from under the rubble and were immediately transferred to the hospital for treatment, while search and rescue operations continue in a race against time.
The relevant authorities have disconnected all services from the collapsed building as a precautionary measure, and a strict security cordon has been imposed around the area to prevent citizens from approaching and to ensure the safety of the rescue teams.
In the background of the incident, concerns are renewed regarding the state of infrastructure in the city, as Alexandria Governor Ahmed Khaled previously revealed that there are 24,000 buildings at risk of collapse in the governorate, including 8,000 buildings for which partial or total demolition orders have been issued, but not all have been executed yet.
Governor Khaled confirmed that the governorate continues inspection and monitoring campaigns to confront any random construction, emphasizing the necessity of strictly applying the law to violators and halting any constructions without permits.
This incident comes at a sensitive time, as Egypt faces multiple challenges, including the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam crisis, which Cairo is accused of being one of the reasons for exacerbating the flood risks threatening some Egyptian governorates, especially in light of the environmental disasters currently affecting neighboring Sudan, which have indirectly impacted the situation within Egyptian territories.
Official authorities in Alexandria are monitoring the rescue operations moment by moment, amid significant public and security anticipation, while final figures regarding the number of missing persons or the total extent of damages have not yet been released.
