Former U.S. President Joe Biden (82 years old) made his first public appearance since announcing that he is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, while attending a mass on Saturday evening at St. Joseph's Church on the Brandywine River, a church he has frequented for many years.
Appearance with Signs of Fatigue
Biden was seen in a fragile health state while leaving the church after a mass that lasted about fifty minutes, as he appeared to be leaning on the arm of a woman assisting him to walk slowly.
Attendees also noticed a visible scar above his right eye, which was said to be the result of surgery performed last month to remove localized skin cancer.
Interaction with Worshippers
After the mass, Biden stopped to greet a number of worshippers and exchanged conversations with them for about ten minutes before leaving the place without his wife Jill Biden, who did not attend the mass.
He appeared wearing a dark suit and spoke calmly with the attendees who wished him a speedy recovery.
Details of Health Condition
This is Biden's first appearance since his medical team announced last week the start of an intensive five-week treatment program, which includes radiation and hormone therapy, after it was found that the cancer he is suffering from is stage four and has spread to the bones.
Doctors confirmed that the tumor is of the hormone-sensitive type, making it manageable through medication and radiation, despite being classified as "high-grade cancer" with a Gleason score of 9.
Medical History and Close Monitoring
The diagnosis of the disease came after Biden reported difficulties in urination, revealing a small nodule in the prostate through tests.
Biden has also undergone two successful surgeries in the past two years to remove skin cancer, the first in his chest in 2023, and the second on his forehead last month, with doctors confirming at that time that no additional intervention was needed.
Political Discussion on Health and Age
These developments have reignited political and media debate in the United States regarding Biden's health status and advanced age, especially amid ongoing public interest in the impact of his health condition on his political future and public role after leaving the White House.
