New Policy from United Airlines: Headphones Mandatory on Board

In a move that has sparked widespread debate online, United Airlines announced a modification to its transportation contract, requiring all passengers to use headphones when listening to audio content on their personal devices, or they may be removed from the flight or banned permanently.

The decision was officially made on February 27, 2026, under a new clause in the "Refusal of Transportation" section, which outlines the circumstances under which the company can deny transportation to any passenger.

The company confirmed that any passenger causing it "any loss, damage, or expenses of any kind" may be held liable for compensation.

United stated in its announcement:

"We have always encouraged our customers to use headphones when listening to audio content, and our Wi-Fi rules already remind customers of this. With the expansion of Starlink service, it seemed the right time to clarify this further by adding it to the transportation contract."

The company also added that passengers who forget their headphones can receive a free pair during the flight if available, according to in-flight entertainment information.

The decision has elicited mixed reactions online, with some Reddit users viewing it as "common sense and should be part of flying rules," while others noted that it has become common, especially among passengers with young children.

A flight attendant noted:

"We have to literally remind passengers of this on every flight, which makes our job harder when we have to monitor public decorum instead of focusing on service and safety."

It is worth mentioning that the decision is part of the company's efforts to expand in-flight entertainment services, including the Starlink satellite internet service, which provides diverse music and video content for passengers.
