Skype's End: Microsoft discontinues the app and reveals its free alternative.

After a journey that lasted for over 22 years, the curtain fell yesterday, Monday, on one of the most famous and influential communication platforms in the digital world: "Skype." The application that revolutionized voice and video communications is officially retiring at the hands of its current owner, the technology giant "Microsoft." Users will not be left stranded, as "Microsoft" has announced the possibility of transitioning to the free "Microsoft Teams" application, where all "Skype" credentials, including contacts and chat history, will be automatically and securely transferred. However, the alternative application does not offer the full experience users were accustomed to with Skype; it imposes restrictions on group video call durations, capped at a maximum of 60 minutes, and does not support prepaid calls or text messages as Skype did. "Microsoft" made sure to give users the chance to bid farewell to their data, allowing them to export it until January 2026, after which it will be permanently deleted with no possibility of recovery. The company justifies its decision as a desire to "simplify free communication services and adapt them to the changing needs of users." Skype's journey began in 2003, quickly becoming synonymous with internet calls, evolving into a technological icon before being acquired by Microsoft in 2011. However, fierce competition and changing user preferences gradually pushed the application into the shadows, leading to the final decision to shut it down. With the end of Skype, a chapter in the history of digital communications closes, paving the way for a new chapter that may not carry the same sparkle but certainly bears the mark of transitioning towards more integrated models linked to the modern Microsoft ecosystem.
