In a new step to limit unwanted messages and random mass broadcasting, Meta has announced the start of testing a feature in the WhatsApp application aimed at restricting the number of messages that can be sent to users who have not responded within a specified time period.
According to TechRadar, the new feature will count every message sent to a person who has not interacted with the sender within a certain monthly limit. Once the recipient responds to the message, it will be excluded from the count. The app will also display a warning when the user is approaching the maximum allowed limit.
Meta has not yet disclosed the exact number of messages that will be considered within this cap, indicating that the company is conducting multiple trials to determine the most suitable limit that balances freedom of use and privacy protection.
The feature primarily aims to reduce annoying marketing activities and accounts that send large amounts of messages to people who do not respond — such as some businesses or promotional accounts that use WhatsApp for mass broadcasting without permission.
The company confirmed that ordinary users will not be affected by these changes, as the new policy focuses on activities with automated or promotional behavior. Accounts that send many messages without receiving responses may face temporary restrictions preventing them from communicating with new contacts until they adjust their activity.
This step is part of WhatsApp's ongoing strategy to combat digital annoyance, following the launch of previous features such as notifications when added to a group without permission and the option to unsubscribe from business messages.
Tech experts believe that this update represents an important development in WhatsApp's policy to ensure a safer and quieter communication environment, but details regarding the implementation mechanism and the official launch date are still under trial until further notice.
