Washington accuses Iranian-backed militias of threatening the lives of Americans and Iraqis and looting the country's resources

The State Department confirmed that these groups "loot Iraqi resources for the benefit of Iran," referring to what it described as "networks of corruption and illegal financing" that work to divert oil revenues and border crossings to external entities, away from Iraqi government oversight.
In contrast, Secretary Rubio emphasized Washington's commitment to working closely with the Iraqi government to enhance shared interests, including supporting security and economic institutions, and countering Iran's increasing influence in the country.
These statements come amid rising regional tensions and an increase in attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria, alongside calls within Congress to reassess the U.S. military presence in the region.
