A medical expert has warned against the habit of sudden awakening before the alarm goes off, indicating that it may be more than just a passing annoyance, but a warning sign of a serious health condition affecting hormones and increasing the risk of deadly heart diseases.
Dr. Gorav Agarwal, a specialist in hormonal disorders, revealed that this habit may be an indicator of an overactive thyroid gland, a medical condition that affects about 1% of the population, where the body secretes excessive amounts of stimulating hormones, causing an annoying state of alertness in the early morning hours.
Lisa Artis, Deputy Chair of the Sleep Charity and Sleep Advisor, explained that an overactive thyroid gland leads to a disruption in the body's response to stress, causing early awakening with a feeling of restlessness.
She confirmed that symptoms progress to include hair loss, dry eyes, neck swelling, unwarranted anxiety, and sudden weight loss.
She pointed out that ignoring treatment could lead to serious life-threatening complications, including osteoporosis and irregular heartbeats that may progress to fatal heart failure, as well as increased risks of miscarriage and premature birth in pregnant women with this condition.
The main cause of this condition is "Graves' disease," an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to attack the thyroid gland itself, leading to visual problems such as bulging eyes and double vision.
Genetic factors and smoking play a role in increasing the likelihood of developing this condition, especially in women over the age of thirty.
Therefore, it is important to pay attention to any unusual changes in your sleep pattern and waking up, and seek medical advice when such signs appear.
Early detection and appropriate treatment can help you avoid serious health complications and maintain your overall quality of life and health.
