UNICEF has called for an urgent rescue plan for Syrian children, warning of a catastrophic deterioration in the conditions of 10.5 million children suffering from poverty and malnutrition amid the collapse of basic services in the country. The organization revealed that more than 75% of Syrian children were born during the ongoing war years, meaning that most of them have only known a reality filled with violence, displacement, and destruction throughout their lives. The humanitarian crisis worsens as 90% of Syrians live below the poverty line, pushing families to desperate measures such as child labor and child marriage. UNICEF's Executive Director, Catherine Russell, described the situation as "devastating for millions of children," stating: "Many children have lived in extreme poverty since birth. We must act now to ensure every Syrian child's right to safety, education, and dignified living." The organization also highlighted the daily risks faced by children, pointing out that 5 million children are still at risk of death or disability due to around 300,000 unexploded ordnances scattered throughout Syria.
