In his first comment on the assassination of conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, U.S. President Donald Trump accused what he described as the "far left" of obstructing national unity, pointing out that they are behind an environment of hatred that fuels political violence in the country.
In a phone interview with NBC last Saturday evening, Trump said:
"I would like to see our nation heal its wounds, but we are dealing with a group of crazies in the radical left, they have never been fair and they never will be."
* Suspect: A young man from Utah with no criminal record
U.S. police announced that Tyler Robinson (aged 22) from Utah is the suspect in the shooting that led to the death of Kirk on the campus of Utah Valley University.
Republican Governor Spencer Cox mentioned that Robinson had shown an increasing interest in politics recently and had previously mentioned during a family dinner a possible visit by Kirk to the state.
Authorities also found bullet casings engraved with messages related to the incident, while the Associated Press reported that Robinson is registered as an independent voter and has never been convicted of any crimes.
* Trump Escalates: Soros Involved and We Will Investigate Under "RICO"
In a notable escalation, Trump directly accused Democratic billionaire George Soros, founder of Open Society Foundations, of being involved in the assassination of Kirk, saying:
"He is a bad man, and he deserves to be in prison. We will open an investigation against him under the organized crime laws RICO."
* Soros Foundation Responds: The Accusations are False and Dangerous
For its part, the Open Society Foundations, which was founded by Soros in 1993, responded with a statement via the "X" platform, firmly denying any connection to acts of violence, asserting that:
"Our mission is to promote human rights, justice, and democratic principles. We do not fund violent protests, and these accusations are false and dangerous."
The foundation added that it supports fundamental freedoms such as freedom of expression and peaceful protest, emphasizing that these values represent the essence of any true democracy.
* Republicans Call for a Wide Investigation .. and Democrats Respond
Trump's statements resonated widely in Republican circles, where several lawmakers held the "far left" responsible for inciting violence, and members of the Freedom Caucus in the House of Representatives called for the formation of a special committee to investigate what they described as "the network of money, influence, and power behind the attack on America and the rule of law."
However, Democrats warned that the hardline rhetoric of Republicans is what creates a dangerous environment leading to political violence, calling for a reduction in tension and hostility.
In a notable stance, Republican Governor Spencer Cox himself called for calming the political atmosphere, considering that the moment requires restraint, not fueling division.
