Facebook has launched a wide-scale campaign resulting in the deletion of over 10 million accounts during the first half of 2025, to enhance user experience and combat 'annoying content'.
This radical step is part of the policy of the company owned by 'Meta', aiming to promote original accounts and reduce the spread of duplicate and non-original content that undermines platform quality.
Facebook stated in an official announcement that the deletion rate exceeded one million accounts monthly, noting that the recurrence of the same content from multiple accounts, whether attempting to impersonate the original content creator or just annoying accounts, diminishes the overall user experience and limits the emergence of new and creative voices.
The company added that it is implementing stricter measures to curb this phenomenon and protect genuine creators, indicating that this campaign has not been without negative consequences, as dozens of users reported their legitimate accounts being mistakenly deleted, which some attributed to shortcomings in the artificial intelligence systems responsible for identifying non-original accounts.
It is worth mentioning that any user whose account is deleted will receive an email notification informing them of the action, thus providing users whose accounts have been deleted the opportunity to submit an appeal within 180 days, after which the deletion becomes permanent.
These developments come within a general trend among technology giants to clean up their platforms, as Google previously announced in 2023 similar plans to delete inactive accounts. The current campaign appears to be a toned-down version of that extreme vision, but it raises questions about the balance between combating annoying content and preserving the rights of legitimate users.
