The United States finished its participation in the World Athletics Championship in a stunning way, as Noah Lyles and Melissa Jefferson-Wood led their country’s team to win gold medals in the men's and women's 4×100 meter relay races, on the championship's final day which witnessed heavy rain.
In the women's race, Jefferson-Wood (24 years old) shone as she became the second woman to sweep all three sprint events in the history of the championship, after helping the American team advance before the final exchange, allowing Sha'Carri Richardson to complete the race in a time of 41.75 seconds.
Jamaica finished second with a time of 41.79 seconds, in a race that saw the retirement of the legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce after winning her 17th medal at the World Championships.
The third place went to Germany with a time of 41.87 seconds, thanks to the outstanding performance of runner Gina Luckenkemper, while Britain came in fourth with a time of 42.07 seconds.
In the men's race, the American team finished the race in 37.29 seconds, led by Noah Lyles who added another gold to his tally after winning the 200 meter race for the fourth consecutive time, along with a bronze in the 100 meter race.
Kenny Bednarek also won gold, after previously earning silver in the 200 meter race.
Canada came in second with a time of 37.55 seconds, while the Netherlands celebrated a historic bronze with a time of 37.81 seconds, achieving a national record.
With two competitors delayed due to the rain, the United States strengthened its lead in the medal table, achieving 16 gold medals, along with five silvers and five bronzes, while Kenya came in second with seven golds, and 48 countries succeeded in winning at least one medal.
