The Lebanese army began today, Thursday, the implementation of the largest operation to withdraw weapons from Palestinian camps on Lebanese territory, in an unprecedented move since the end of the Lebanese civil war.
This operation was approved by a previous decision issued by the Lebanese government, and it is expected to bring about a significant change in the security landscape within those areas.
Lebanese sources confirmed that the operation is the largest of its kind in decades, and it includes Palestinian camps located south and north of the Litani River, as part of a comprehensive security plan aimed at disarming illegal weapons, restoring security, and curbing the phenomenon of loose weapons.
The sources explained that the step came as a result of direct and prior coordination with the Palestinian Authority, reflecting a political consensus on the necessity of ending the armed situation within the camps and gradually integrating them into the Lebanese legal framework.
In the same context, the sources revealed the start of coordinated efforts with international parties to secure political and logistical support for the Lebanese army, as part of a plan extending until the end of this year (2025), which enhances the military institution's ability to carry out its tasks effectively and with minimal tensions.
The operation, which falls within a broader strategy to enhance the state's prestige and sovereignty over its entire territory, comes amid increasing security and economic challenges, and may be seen as an indicator of the beginning of a new phase in the relationship between the Lebanese state and the Palestinian camps spread throughout the country.
