Close associates of former Iranian president and leader of the reformist movement Mohammad Khatami have denied the news that he left the country, asserting that the information circulating on some digital platforms is "fabricated and baseless."
Official Denial and Warning Against Rumors
The Iranian news agency (IRNA) clarified that the news spreading through channels on the "Telegram" app and accounts on social media regarding Khatami's departure from Iran is completely false, noting that his close associates quickly refuted it upon its dissemination.
Abtahi: No Illness or Travel
Reformist leader and former vice president Mohammad Ali Abtahi confirmed that Khatami "is not ill and has not traveled to England for treatment," considering that some platforms were specifically created to promote such claims.
Abtahi added, in a post on the "X" platform, that the aim of circulating this news is to "distract attention from the bitter realities," referring to the internal conditions the country is experiencing.
Flood of Rumors in the Digital Space
The denial came after unverified reports circulated about Khatami leaving Iran, amid a rise in uncertain news across social media, reflecting the extent of influence that digital platforms now have in shaping public opinion within Iran.
