In a surprising move that sparked controversy, the name of director Tarek Alarian disappeared from the opening and closing credits of the series "Muawiyah," the massive historical work documenting a pivotal period in Islamic history.
This disappearance led viewers to wonder: Was it a personal decision, or a result of disagreements with the production company?
Director Ahmed Medhat, who took over the direction of the series after its hiatus, revealed that Alarian himself requested the removal of his name, feeling upset due to the deletion of some scenes during the review process.
Medhat emphasized that he does not consider himself a party to the matter, stressing his respect for Alarian.
The series, produced with a huge budget, underwent meticulous reviews by the Saudi scholars, leading to substantial modifications that stirred tension and attraction between the production company and the cast.
Despite the actual cost of the project being unknown, these reviews caused disputes over the artistic vision, which may be one of the reasons behind Alarian's decision.
Since its announcement, it was evident that "Muawiyah" would be controversial, given the sensitivity of the historical period it covers, and the multiple narratives about its characters and events. However, the surprise was in the quick and unexpected reactions, notably the statement by Al-Azhar after the airing of the first episode.
The series "Muawiyah" is presented entirely in classical Arabic, narrating the events following the assassination of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan, through the conflict between Ali ibn Abi Talib and Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, until the rise of the Umayyad state.
The cast includes Lujain Ismaeel (Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan), Eyad Nassar (Ali ibn Abi Talib), Ayman Zeidan, Samer Al-Masry, Soheir Ben Amara (Hind bint Utbah), Wael Sharaf (Amr ibn al-Aas), and other stars. The script was written by Khaled Salah, and initially directed under the supervision of Tarek Alarian before his name was later removed.
The lingering question remains: Was Alarian's decision merely a protest against the modifications, or are there other reasons yet to be revealed?
