The Lebanese Foreign Minister, Youssef Riachi, welcomed the decision to lift sanctions on Syria, emphasizing that the step will have a positive economic impact on Lebanon, especially regarding border control and enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
Riachi explained that the improvement of conditions in Syria will help accelerate the reconstruction process, indirectly benefiting the Lebanese economy, especially since Beirut is poised to benefit from the trade and reconstruction activities that will take place across the borders.
The Minister pointed out that easing the economic pressure on Syria would lead to a reduction in smuggling activities, contributing to greater stability on both sides of the borders. He confirmed the existence of joint efforts between Beirut and Damascus to fully and definitively secure the borders.
Regarding the demarcation of borders between the two countries, Riachi clarified that the issue is complex and requires the formation of a joint Lebanese-Syrian technical committee to address it. He also emphasized that the Syrian side has shown a clear willingness to cooperate with Lebanon in this regard.
