Sri Lanka has revealed a giant purple star sapphire considered the largest of its kind globally, with experts estimating its value at no less than $300 million, making it one of the most expensive gemstones ever discovered.
"Star of the Pure Earth"
The stone, named "Star of the Pure Earth," weighs 3,563 carats and features a star pattern with six rays on its surface, making it extremely rare among sapphires. It was recently displayed in the capital Colombo amid widespread global interest.
Gem expert Ashan Amarasinghe confirmed to the "Mirror" newspaper that this gem is the largest of its kind documented in the world, noting its uniqueness and star shape that distinguishes it from other sapphires.
Discovery and Documentation of the Stone
The sapphire was discovered in 2023 near the town of Ratnapura, known as the "City of Gems," before being purchased as part of a collection of other stones. The owners did not realize its true value until two years later, prompting them to officially document it and have it certified by specialized laboratories.
International Standard Valuation
International valuation experts estimate the stone's value between $300 and $400 million (£224 and £298 million), making it an exceptional stone in terms of size, rarity, and quality.
Sri Lanka and the World of Sapphires
Sri Lanka is globally renowned for producing rare sapphires that combine distinctive colors, clarity, and natural brilliance. In recent years, several unique stones have been discovered that have broken records at global auctions, such as the blue "Regent Kashmir" sapphire, the "Black Star of Hela" and the "Eye of Hope" from green beryl.
The unveiling of the Star of the Pure Earth represents a stunning addition to Sri Lanka's record in the world of rare gemstones, enhancing its status as a major global source of unique sapphires.
