In a horrifying incident that revealed the dark side of the migration crisis; Libyan authorities announced on Thursday the discovery of 55 bodies of undocumented migrants buried under the sands in a mass grave in the city of Kufra in southeast Libya. This brings the total number of discovered graves in one week to three, exposing the atrocities faced by migrants during their perilous journeys.
According to the Emergency and Ambulance Services in Kufra, 11 bodies have been recovered from the mass grave so far, with expectations of up to 74 bodies. It is noted that this grave may be close to an illegal detention center, where victims are believed to have perished while attempting to cross the Libyan desert, which has become a hub for human trafficking gangs.
Local authorities have initiated intensive investigations to uncover the circumstances of the deaths, questioning whether these migrants died due to hunger, thirst, and exhaustion after being abandoned by smugglers, or if trafficking gangs eliminated them and buried them to conceal their crimes.
This horrifying revelation comes after the discovery of another mass grave in the Ajkhara area in southeast Libya containing 19 bodies, in addition to the rescue of 76 undocumented migrants from a criminal gang and the recovery of 28 bodies from a secret prison in Kufra where they were held captive by a human trafficking network.
These shocking discoveries shed light on the deadly risks faced by undocumented migrants during their journeys through Libya in their quest for Europe, emphasizing the urgent need to take immediate measures to protect the lives of these innocent individuals who fall victim to the deadly trade across the desert.
