The convicted individual for attempting to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump, Ryan Roth, tried to stab himself in the neck after hearing the jury's verdict convicting him on all charges against him, in a court in Florida.
The jury, consisting of five men and seven women, took two hours to reach their decision. As the jury members were leaving the courtroom, Roth attempted to use a pen to harm himself before marshals intervened, stopped him, and escorted him out of the court.
His daughter, Sarah Roth, shouted from the courtroom, "Dad, I love you, don't do anything... I will get you out of here... He hasn't harmed anyone," accusing the court of fabricating the case, and later waited at the guard's gate to watch for his transfer to jail.
Roth faced multiple charges including: attempting to assassinate a prominent presidential candidate, possession of a firearm to commit a violent crime, assaulting a federal officer, and possession of a weapon and ammunition as a convicted felon, in addition to owning a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He pleaded not guilty and decided to represent himself based on his constitutional right.
The prosecution stated that Roth planned for weeks to kill Trump at the West Palm Beach golf club on September 15, 2024, but did not fire after an intervention by a Secret Service agent. The trial lasted two weeks, featuring testimonies from 38 witnesses for the prosecution compared to only 3 for the defense.
Attorney General Pam Bondi described the verdict as evidence of the Justice Department's commitment to punishing perpetrators of political violence, considering the assassination attempt an assault on the president and the entire nation. Despite the federal verdict, Roth also faces state-level charges related to terrorism and attempted murder.
It is noted that Roth has previously been linked to extremist behaviors and violent plans, including attempting to recruit fighters in Ukraine, and has a criminal record that includes automatic weapons and explosives, in addition to being found with over 100 stolen items in a warehouse he owned in 2010.
