Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attacked what she described as "the silence and downplaying of the crime" that took the life of conservative American activist Charlie Kirk, strongly criticizing comments that she saw as justifying violence and celebrating his death.
Meloni said during her speech at the National Day of the Center Union: "We in the Brothers of Italy party are accused of spreading hatred, while these people justify the killing of a young man whose only fault was courageously expressing his ideas," considering that "political violence is dramatically returning to the scene".
She added: "Those who lack an argument first resort to insult, then to verbal violence, and finally to physical violence. Have we reached the point of legitimizing the killing of people because of their opinions?" pointing out that she had observed "inhumane" comments regarding Kirk's murder.
Meloni confirmed that her government is moving forward with reforms to enhance Italy's international standing, with a particular focus on reforming the judicial system to achieve more efficient justice, supporting the middle class in the new budget, reducing taxes despite the burden of debt, in addition to pushing for reforms in the prime ministerial system to ensure government stability.
In the context of defending democracy, Meloni emphasized her rejection of abolishing party gatherings in favor of electronic voting.
