On the second day of the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and with thousands of displaced people gradually returning from the south to the north, Hamas announced that it would not attend the official celebration for the signing of the agreement in Cairo.
Hamas leader Hussam Badran stated that the signing ceremony would be limited to mediators and American and Israeli officials, emphasizing that Hamas would remain committed to the agreement but would respond to any Israeli military violation.
Badran added that the next round of negotiations would be more complicated, stressing that the talk about removing the movement's leaders from Gaza is "baseless".
On another note, Hamas officials reiterated that the issue of weapons is not up for negotiation, describing the demand for disarmament included in U.S. President Donald Trump's plan as "off the table".
At the same time, the movement's spokesman Hazem Qassem indicated that the issue of weapons would be discussed within the Palestinian house to reach a national formula, considering it "legitimate weaponry for the defense of the people".
Israel had agreed on Friday to the first phase of Trump's plan, which included:
- Immediate ceasefire.
- Withdrawal of the Israeli army from some areas of the strip.
- Prisoner exchange.
- Introduction of humanitarian aid.
- Initiation of reconstruction steps.
- Formation of a transitional authority to manage Gaza.
